Higher education has been in the spotlight the past year, mostly because of Obama's initiative to have every American commit to at least one year of college. Mothers are especially encouraged. Obama's American Recovery and Reinvestment Act has revamped government funding for education programs; providing more funding and opening eligibility. Many private institutions are following Obama's bold lead by offering scholarships geared towards our nation's mothers. Project Working Mom: Putting Education to Work is the newest scholarship on the market. It is a coalition of universities (mostly online colleges) offering $2 million in scholarships for mothers who wish to go to, or return to, school. The Patsy Takemoto Mink Education Foundation for Low-Income Women and Children honors a former US Congresswoman by providing scholarships for low income women (who tend to be mothers). The Fleming Associates Young Parent Program is designed to help low income single mothers get an education. Raise the Nation is a scholarship program for single mothers by single mothers that can be used to repay student loans or fund current tuition costs. The Women's Opportunity Awards targets women who are the primary source of financial support for their families. Women over 25 are eligible for the Charlotte W. Newcombe Foundation Scholarship for Mature Women and women over 35 can receive the Jeanette Rankin Foundation Scholarship. Some of the regional or university based scholarships aimed at mothers are: The Arkansas Single Parent Scholarship Fund; Climb Wyoming Program; Ford Opportunity Program; and the University Women's Clubs Non-Traditional Student Scholarship. Survivors of domestic violence can get assistance to go to school from the R.O.S.E. Scholarship and the Women's Independence Scholarship Program from the Sunshine Lady Foundation. Women seeking graduate degrees in marine science can qualify for the International Women's Fishing Association Scholarship and African American women always have the option of the United Negro Fund Scholarship Programs. Becoming a college mom is simple with government grants and private scholarships.
